Homeschooling for a Purpose

December 26, 2007 / by angelface79

In my family, we all went to public school. Homeschool was never mentioned, although I can honestly look back now and say I would have loved it. Back then though, I don't even know if families were able to homeschool their children. So we are the first homeschoolers in our family.

Really, I can't look back and say I gained much from public school except for my education. I really could have done without the school bullies, hateful comments, and the girls that always wanted to fight. I never was in the popular crowd, and as an adult I realize that it never really mattered anyhow. But as a child, that was something that was important. Not just to me, but to all children everywhere. Peer pressure was a daily thing. Cruelty, gossip, and hateful comments were a daily thing. So I can honestly look back and say I truly didn't get much from public school but education.

Many people don't realize how great it truly is for a child to homeschool. A homeschooled child really gets all the socialization they need without the public school. I don't know how other states are, but here students spend the majority of their days having to be quiet. They all sit at their desks quietly, not allowed to interact with other children. Recess is a brief 10 minute deal. The times they are allowed to socialize usually ends up with children being mean to other children. I don't call this a great way to socialize your child.

Not to mention the other influences that are coming in to play now with our public schools. You never know when someone is going to go off and shoot someone else. That happened locally about ten years ago. It was a horrible thing.

We do the majority of our homeschool online. It covers Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. We do writing, reading, and more offline. The online homeschooling includes phonics, and they are really great.

I really enjoy his first grade homeschool online, and it can be used in anyone's household. For religious and non-religious homeschoolers alike. I say that because the program does not contain any objectionable content at all. If you are doing Christian homeschooling, you can use it to cover many subjects then add the Christian part offline. If you are looking to have a non-religious based curriculum, you can just following the online homeschooling curriculum. It works both ways. Best of all, you can see exactly what your child completed with the online curriculum.

We are a Christian household, but we haven't started formally adding Christian-based lessons yet on a daily basis. This is something we cover some but not daily. Sunday school helps a lot.

My son really enjoys his first grade lessons online. Time4learning.com has helped so much through our homeschooling journey . I check out their parent forums a lot for advice and to learn from other people. The curriculum is sound and solid, and that is very reassuring to me. I know they have a curriculum that is going to cover most if not all of what he needs to know in the above subjects. I know, I've checked!

The online curriculum helps me to reinforce the message to my child that education does not have to be boring. It can be entertaining and fun. By a child really enjoying their lessons, they are going to learn more. And his first grade activities are fun!

We are homeschooling not only for education but for a purpose. I feel that a lot of children are not taught how to act. They are not taught to be thoughtful, polite, or even honest. I know that my job is to teach my children this and more for a happy life.

Time4learning.com offers a very affordable program. It's only $19.95 per month. We log in and out of the curriculum as needed. It keeps track of where we left off, so my son is able to login on his own. We've actually had other kids over that watch him do his lessons, and they think it's really cool to watch. If you are interested in homeschool online, you should check them out.

This post is entirely my own words and my own thoughts. We really enjoy the program. I have been compensated for sharing them.
